Secure Access Service Edge (SASE)

What is SASE?

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is a cloud-native architecture that combines networking and security services into a unified platform. It delivers WAN (wide area network) and security functions - such as SD-WAN, firewall, secure web gateway (SWG), cloud access security broker (CASB), zero trust network access (ZTNA) - as a service, typically from a globally distributed set of points of presence (PoPs). The goal is to provide secure, high-performance access for users, devices, and applications no matter where they are.

Why SASE Matters

As organizations adopt cloud services, use more remote or hybrid work, and support employees on mobile or unmanaged devices, traditional perimeter-based security breaks down. SASE helps solve this by pushing security, access, and network policies to the edge. It improves performance by reducing backhauling of traffic (sending all data via central data centers), which cuts latency and improves user experience especially for cloud apps. Simplification: consolidates many point products into a more coherent stack, enabling uniform policies, identity-driven access, and often lower overhead in management and costs.

Core Components of SASE

Here are the key pieces that together make up a full SASE solution:
Component
SD-WAN (Software-Defined WAN)
Secure Web Gateway (SWG)
Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB)
Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA)
Firewall as a Service (FWaaS) / Next-Gen Firewall (NGFW)
